Heritage New West invites residents to attend its March 17 AGM and to its May 26 heritage homes tour.

Heritage New West invites community members to learn about heritage and to tour local buildings at two upcoming events – starting this week.

Heritage New West is holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday, March 17. After a brief meeting to deal with society business (including a message from HNW president Deane Gurney and the election of the 2024 board of directors) there will be a special presentation from Britney Dack, board chair of Heritage BC.

Situating Heritage in Changing Times is the theme of Dack’s presentation. Dack, who is the City of New Westminster’s senior heritage planner, will discuss a variety of topics from a Heritage BC perspective, including new zoning in the province.

“She is planning to speak on a variety of heritage issues and will also share some potential impacts, possible impacts on heritage, as a result of new provincial legislation,” Heritage New West member Gail North told city council at Monday’s meeting.

Heritage New West’s annual general meeting is on Wednesday, March 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park.

North also encourages community members to mark Sunday, May 26 on their calendars, as that’s the day of the New Westminster Heritage Homes Tour. She said the homes tour returned last year after a three-year break because of COVID.

“There is a very interesting and diverse group of buildings this year, all over New West,” she said.

Tickets for this year’s tour will be for sale in early April. Volunteers are always needed to staff buildings on the tour.

“If you think you might like to volunteer, please go to our website or send us an email to add your name to the list because we can always use more,” North said. “You give us your time for half a day, and we'll give you a ticket to see the rest of what is going on.”

Heritage New West (formerly the New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society) is a registered charity that supports the conservation of heritage homes, buildings and structures.
