Pearl Deasey is the new student trustee with School District No. 46.

Pearl Deasey was sworn in as the new student trustee with the School District No. 46 Board of Education last week. The Grade 12 Chatelech Secondary School student will serve as student trustee until the end of this school year.

“I want to sit as the student trustee because I’ve been involved in leadership over the last few years and I’ve really enjoyed engaging with community partners and representing student voices,” she said.

Deasey said she’s hoping student voices will be heard and said, “I will work hard to listen to the concerns and ideas of my classmates and I’m excited to use my skills to connect with and support students across the district.”

Deasey has been part of the District Student Leadership Team (DSLT) for more than a year. That team meets with school administration to collaborate about a wide variety of student issues such as technology in schools, busing and mental health. Deasey also volunteers as a peer counsellor at Chatelech. In that role she works with Grade 8 students with the Mentors in Violence Prevention program, “to give them the tools for confronting, interrupting and preventing gender-based violence.” She is also active with the school’s ultimate Frisbee, snowboarding and soccer teams.

Despite the busy schedule, Deasey is also finding time to plan for her future. “I am busy applying to science and business faculties in universities across the country. I look forward to learning more about leadership, community contribution and how our world runs,” she said.
