Coast Cable has just completed a multi-million dollar network upgrade that will add telephone service to their list of products available to Coast customers.

"We're really excited about launching phone and offering this unique long distance service and expect our customers will be very pleased," regional manager Wayne Rothenberger said in a news release.

The new phone service comes with free long distance calling to Vancouver and surrounding Lower Mainland communities.

Customers who sign up for the service will be connected to Coast Cable's fibre network and will be able to keep their existing telephone numbers at no additional cost with no network access fees or start up fees.

Coast Cable is owned by Eastlink, which now has the distinction of being the first cable company in Canada to enter the telephone market.

The growth hasn't changed Coast Cable's commitment to local community programming.

"We have a long history of providing local news, information, entertainment and sports to our viewers through Coast TV," Rothenberger said.

He also noted Coast Cable is particularly proud of its partnership with Elphinstone Secondary School and the ETV program.

"ETV provides students with a wonderful opportunity to showcase the video work they do as part of their onsite training. It's a cool partnership; the studio is located in a converted classroom and students enrolled in ETV courses are trained on Coast TV equipment and volunteer on Coast TV shows," Rothenberger said.
