A new endowment fund is expected to generate about $6,000 in grant money next year for Sunshine Coast youth involved in sports.
Grants from the new Youth Sports Endowment fund will be administered through the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation (SCCF) and will be available to apply for in early 2018.
“The funds can be used for a broad range of purposes: registration fees, training, travel costs, equipment costs, field/court upgrades and repairs, and sports program development,” said Kelly Foley with the SCCF.
“Families (on behalf of their children), youth, and sports clubs can apply.”
The new Youth Sports Endowment was created by way of a $150,000 donation from Bill and Joan Humphries, Catharine Esson and David Crosby.
“The donors believe that sports for youth is a vital contributor to creating a strong community [and that] sports provide an opportunity for young people to learn about teamwork, inclusion, and leadership while promoting healthy living,” Foley said.
The endowment fund will be held by the SCCF and the earnings on the investment each year will be granted to deserving applicants.
“This is a legacy fund that will support youth sports in our community forever,” Foley noted.
Foley said the amount of funds available should grow yearly, especially if others decided to donate.
“We are hoping other community members come forward and donate to the fund,” Bill Humphries said, noting more donations would make the endowment fund “a major game changer for youth sports on the Sunshine Coast.”
