West Vancouver - Sunshine Coast - Sea to Sky Country member of Parliament John Weston celebrated progress of National Health and Fitness Day 2013 at a kickoff gathering last week in Ottawa.

More than 60 MPs have expressed interest in approaching the towns and cities in their ridings to promote this day. These MPs will approach their local governments to work together to promote health and fitness in their communities. The athletic facilities will be highlighted asvehicles to increase physical participation and an opportunity for leadership of local governments in improving Canadians' health. This will occur differently in many towns and might include free tennis lessons, half price swim time or extended ice time hours.

This project is part of a larger national movement designed as one response to related factors: alarming rates of childhood obesity and the resultant diabetes, cardiovascular problems and other chronic diseases.

Weston brought forward a private member's bill to create a National Health and Fitness Day onthe first Saturday in June every year. This year's date is June 1.
