Mischief to mailboxes

Gibsons

Sunshine Coast RCMP are investigating after three incidents of explosives being set off in Gibsons recently.

On Nov. 26, around 5:30 p.m., a resident on Poplar Lane in Gibsons reported that her metal mailbox at the end of her driveway had just been blown apart.

Around 2 a.m. on Nov. 28, a community book exchange box at the corner of O’Shea Road and Shaw Road was vandalized, and an explosive is also suspected to have been used. Finally, around 11 p.m. on Nov. 30, another mailbox on Poplar Lane was blown apart.

Given the close proximity in time and location, police believe all three incidents are related, and are taking the matter seriously.

“Although this may seem like an innocent prank to some, these incidents are destroying people’s property, and could cause injury to anyone around when the explosion goes off,” said Const. Harrison Mohr.

Police believe the explosives used may be firecrackers, but are continuing to investigate, and do not have any suspects at this time.

Those involved in these incidents could face a criminal charge of mischief. Police encourage anyone with information about these incidents to call RCMP, at 604-885-2266, or Crimestoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
