Environment Canada has confirmed that last month was both the driest and warmest May on record for the Sunshine Coast.

Meteorologist Doug Lundquist said although the Sechelt weather station recorded more, the overall precipitation on the Sunshine Coast in May worked out to just 3.8 mm. The previous record for lack of rain was set in 1982 when just 12.7 mm fell.

The average temperature for the month, 14.9 C, was just marginally higher than the average for May 2016, which was 14.7 C.

Lundquist said, looking ahead, Environment Canada sees an 80 per cent probability that June, July and August will be warmer than average.

The cool, wetter weather that moved into the region last week has reduced the wildfire danger ratings to moderate or low.
