Many on Island, Gulf Islands still without power

About 4,000 people are still without power on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands in the wake of the Dec. 20 storm, but B.C. Hydro expects the vast majority will have power by today.

About 4,000 people are still without power on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands in the wake of the Dec. 20 storm, but B.C. Hydro expects the vast majority will have power by today.

On Salt Spring Island, about 2,000 customers are still without power. Many will remain in the dark until Sunday, said B.C. Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk.

About 800 customers are still without power in Nanaimo, Gabriola Island, Thetis Island and the Cedar-Yellow Point area. The Duncan area is still experiencing some pockets of outages.

On Galiano Island, there are fewer than 700 homes without power. There are also a small number of outages on Saturna, Pender and Mayne Island

Power is back on in Bamfield, which was one of the hardest-hit areas on Vancouver Island. Damage was so severe, B.C. Hydro crews had to rebuild portions of the distribution system.

About 120 B.C. Hydro crews are working to repair downed power lines across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands today.
