A man who pleaded guilty to poaching crab last year in the waters off Ocean Beach Esplanade in Elphinstone has been levied fines totalling $6,750 and faces forfeiture of his gear.

Lyle Donald Sparrow, Jr., 63, was one of three men charged after Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) officers boarded a boat in late January 2017, after getting reports from the public of suspicious activity in area waters.

Sparrow pleaded guilty to fishing without a licence, leaving fishing gear unattended without an owner name on it, and making false statements to a DFO officer, and was sentenced in Vancouver Provincial Court on June 5.

The other two men facing charges, John Barry Grant and Arnold Robert Wilson, will be back in court July 18.
