Little change in standings as final vote count begins

Nicholas Simons remains on track to be confirmed for a fifth term as the NDP MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast.

Elections BC began the final count on Nov. 6. It involves tallying mail-in ballots as well as ballots cast at district electoral offices and absentee ballots cast by voters who were outside their home riding on election day.

Elections BC said there were 9,046 additional ballots to be screened and counted for Powell River-Sunshine Coast.

Heading into the final count, Simons had about 48 per cent of the 16,068 votes cast in advance polls and on election day for a total of 7,708.  Kim Darwin of the Greens had 5,589 votes and Liberal candidate Sandra Stoddart-Hansen 2,771.

There is a three-day window to complete the final count, but some ridings may finish before then. Elections BC has been updating the count at results.elections.bc.ca

As of 3 p.m. on Nov. 6, the standings in Powell River-Sunshine Coast, with 16,641 votes counted, were:

• Nicholas Simons, NDP – 7,968

• Kim Darwin, Green – 5,813

• Sandra Stoddart-Hansen, B.C. Liberals – 2,860

After the final count the writs of election from each riding are returned to the chief electoral officer and Elections BC said it expects that to be done by Nov. 16.
