Legacy fund provides grants

Community Forest

The Sunshine Coast community forest legacy fund was created in February by the community forest and its shareholder, the District of Sechelt, to help finance long-term projects, which will benefit all residents of the lower Sunshine Coast.

Recently, legacy fund awards were presented to the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden Society and to the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).

The Garden Society was granted $37,350 to build bridges and boardwalks, which will provide access to a new pond/wetland garden, expected to open next summer. This grant provides public access to a new pond, a key element of the native plant garden, which features plants of our unique ecosystems including rainforest, rain shadow and subalpine regions. School classes, gardeners, tourists and the general public will all enjoy these areas.

The SCRD was granted $29,000 to build a log bus shelter on Highway 101 in front of St. Mary’s Hospital. The bus shelter will be constructed of log timbers and replicate the design and be built by the same local contractor as the bus shelter across the highway in front of Raven’s Cry Theatre.

The community forest encourages any community groups, public sector agencies and non-profit organizations to submit applications for funding to help make their dreams a reality. See www.sccf.ca to learn more about the legacy fund and to obtain an application form.
