The storm system that hit the Coast on Wednesday (Feb. 8) brought snow and heavy rain forcing schools and recreation facilities to close on Feb. 9
School District No. 46 said they decided to close schools because conditions on side roads were making travel by school bus and cars dangerous. Schools will also be closed Friday, Feb. 10 for a Professional Development Day (check www.sd46.bc.ca for updates). Capilano U's Sunshine Coast campus in Sechelt was open, but students were being told to allow extra time to get to class because of the variable road conditions.
The Sunshine Coast Regional District closed its offices and cancelled the committee and board meetings that were sceduled for Feb. 9. All recreation facilities were closed for the day as well (check www.scrd.ca for updates). The committee and board meetings will likely be rescheduled for Thursday, February 16.
As of 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 9, Sunshine Coast Transit was running as scheduled on plowed roads only. Transit was advising riders that because of the rain and slush if temperatures drop service could be cancelled on hilly routes in places like Lower Road in Roberts Creek, Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay (check www.scrd.ca for updates).
