The School District No. 46 (SD46) Board of Education last week announced the appointment of Kirsten Deasey to the position of district principal of learning and innovation.

Deasey’s responsibilities in the new role, which takes effect Jan. 1, will include the leadership of the district’s early learning and literacy programs, and implementation of the revised curriculum.

Deasey, who was a classroom teacher in Coquitlam before moving to the Sunshine Coast, has been a support services teacher in Davis Bay Elementary and Sechelt Elementary schools and has held the position of early learning coordinator since 2003.

“Her work in the early years has been recognized across the province, and the programs and supports that she has developed are currently implemented in our own and other districts,” SD46 said in a news release. “She has designed and led numerous collaborative strategies to support educators across our district to reflect and learn together.”

Superintendent of schools Patrick Bocking said the district principal position “supports the board’s strategic plan of ensuring that we fully meet the needs of students, staff and community.”

Deasey said she was enthusiastic about her new role.

“It encompasses all of the areas that I love to be involved with, including literacy, numeracy and the early years. I am grateful that I will continue to work with the staff of the Early Learning Department, who provide so much for children and families in our district. I look forward to this wonderful opportunity,” she said.
