Investing locally focus of public forum

Economy

Representatives from the new, member-owned Coast Community Investment Co-op will speak at an Invest Locally public forum on Jan. 26, hosted by Sunshine Coast Credit Union.

The Co-op is one of three Rhiza Capital investment vehicles including the Venture Capital Corporation and the Community Investment Corporation, varying in risk and return and community impact. Rhiza Capital is a collaboration of Community Futures Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Coast Credit Union and the Powell River Community Investment Corporation.

“Rhiza, Greek in origin, refers to root structure. We’re intent on growing local economies and healthy communities by connecting root capital to impact ventures,” said Brian Smith, CEO, Rhiza Capital. “We’re talking about community investment that adds economic, social and environmental value that we can take pride in – with a modest financial return. The investment market in Canada is clearly undergoing a shift toward impact and local.”

Attendees at the Invest Locally event will hear from Sunshine Coast leaders and learn more about joining the Co-op. Light refreshments will be provided and door prizes will include a book bundle by economist Michael Shuman, author of Local Dollars, Local Sense and an expert on community economics and the advantages of small-scale businesses in a globalization era.

The event is scheduled to run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Credit Union’s Sechelt branch, 5655 Teredo St. Admission is free.
