Sechelt will hold a public information meeting on its proposed non-medical cannabis bylaw, followed immediately by a public hearing, on June 19.

The bylaw got first reading at the June 6 council meeting.

It will set out zoning for the production of non-medical cannabis that mirrors the current rules for growing medical cannabis, although growing in homes for personal use will be allowed to conform with the new federal and provincial laws.

As part of the establishment of zoning for retailers under the new federal and provincial laws, Sechelt’s three existing dispensaries, which are all operating without business licences, will be asked to briefly close and apply to reopen under a temporary use permit.

“I hope everyone recognizes the respectful approach that we’re trying to follow on this as the new legislation comes in,” said Mayor Bruce Milne.

The information meeting starts at 6 p.m. at the Municipal Hall. The public hearing will get underway at 7 p.m.
