More than half the volunteer crew of the Egmont and District Fire Department and a crew from the Pender Harbour Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire in Egmont early Sunday morning, Aug. 23.
First responders were alerted to the house fire on Maple Road at 1:50 a.m.
“Flames [were] shooting out of a house,” said Egmont Fire Chief Kal Helyar.
The fire started in a crawlspace in the basement and travelled to the second floor where one bedroom was heavily damaged.
“Luckily we managed to stop it before the fire got into the attic,” said Helyar.
By 2:30 a.m. the blaze was under control. The fire did not appear to be suspicious and Helyar said it was possibly caused by an electrical fault in an accessory. The two occupants on site were able to exit the house without injury.
Five firefighters from the Pender fire department attended the call in addition to 12 Egmont firefighters, RCMP and BC Ambulance crews.
This was the first house fire of the year in Egmont.
