Arts and human-rights advocate Frances Wasserlein died two years ago, but her passion lives on as a group of her friends spearhead a garage sale Aug. 26 to raise funds to establish a memorial to her indomitable spirit.
The book club Frances belonged to, The Bees, dearly miss the monthly sessions when Frances would, in her most formidable way, enhance the discussion through her understanding of women’s history and social activism.
“We want to have a physical reminder of Frances’ commitment to change for social good,” book club member Sue Inglis explained. “We’re in conversation with the Sechelt library as to how this might unfold.”
It’s hard to forget Frances, who was indefatigable in righting wrongs. A West Coast activist for four decades and prominent in feminist groups, she was the executive producer of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, co-founder of Women Against Violence Against Women (WAVAW/Rape Relief) in 1982, an organizer with Women Against the Budget in 1983 opposing the SoCred’s vindictive budget that would hurt minorities and women, and was a member of the BC Arts Board (which today is the BC Arts Council), for six years.
After moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2004, Frances was executive director of the S.C. Community Arts Council for six years, served as a trustee of the Sechelt Public Library, and taught cultural event management at Capilano College and SFU.
“The book club is kicking off the fundraising process by bringing the community together as contributors and visitors to the garage sale, while continuing discussions with community groups in which Frances was involved,” Inglis said.
“It’s a pleasant task to organize and ask folks to contribute when it invokes the memory of Frances; she was well respected and loved.”
The garage sale is Saturday, Aug. 26, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Davis Bay Hall, rain or shine. There will be lots of items, a bake sale and refreshments. Mark the date and come on out. “We intend to set prices low and let the items go!”
