A new space in one of Sechelt’s oldest buildings was opened to the public following a May 17 ribbon cutting ceremony with (from left) archivist Ann Watson, Sechelt Mayor Bruce Milne, constituency assistant Michelle Morton representing MLA Nicholas Simons, and Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky. Looking on is Siobhan Smith, arts, culture and communications coordinator for District of Sechelt. The 82-year-old Rockwood Lodge is the only designated heritage building in Sechelt. Renovations to fix water damage were funded by a $65,000 provincial Canada 150 Celebrating BC grant. The nearly 70-square metre lower level will be used as a multi-purpose space for the public and community groups. Milne said the Rockwood Lodge is one of the few historic buildings in Sechelt outside of shíshálh Nation heritage sites and that through the renovations, builders were able to turn “what used to be a basementy kind of a thing … into a really nice space.”
