Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (GWRC) is asking for the community’s help to create a new space for wild animals in need of rehabilitation.
Currently birds and small mammals at GWRC needing daily care and rehabilitation are housed in a room in the home of Clint and Irene Davy, who run the non-profit centre.
For the past 30 years the couple has been making space inside their home for the animals, which isn’t ideal, and although a new outdoor space has been a dream for several years, the thought of fundraising for it has been overwhelming.
The GWRC is run entirely on donations and the Davys spend the majority of their time fundraising just to keep the centre operating, Irene said.
So when a volunteer came forward with the idea of spearheading a campaign to fundraise for a new self-contained rehabilitation area, Irene said “go for it.”
The “FundRazr by Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre” page was started last week with a goal of raising $25,000 by December for the purchase of a used trailer to house the rehabilitation space.
As of Wednesday this week, over $3,000 had been raised.
Once the $25,000 goal has been reached, the Davys plan to purchase a second-hand trailer with a sink and a bathroom and then renovate it for the animals and place it on their property.
Irene expects the trailer to cost anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 and the additional funds will be needed to make the new trailer suitable for rehabilitation efforts.
If you would like to give but don’t have access to the online fundraising page, donations can be dropped off or mailed to the GWRC at 1211 Carmen Road, Gibsons, B.C. V0N1V4. Please stipulate the money is for the building fund. All donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt.
The GWRC is the Coast’s only organization dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned wildlife. The GWRC takes in hundreds of birds and mammals every year for rehabilitation and release.
The centre receives no provincial or federal funds for the work it does. It runs solely on donations from the public.
