Sunshine Coast RCMP are reminding residents of the month-long firearms amnesty, which continues until the end of October. Under the province-wide amnesty, people can turn over firearms that they are not legally entitled to own or no longer want to keep.
Across the Coast, people have guns that they no longer want or are no longer allowed to have. In some cases, people may have let their firearms licences expire or may have guns that are required to be registered but never have been. In other cases, people may have inherited a firearm from a family member or simply decided they no longer need that rifle or shotgun that was used for hunting years ago.
Not only can such firearms be a danger to other people or children in your home, but every year Sunshine Coast RCMP respond to multiple reports of firearms being stolen during break and enters. These have occurred even when firearms are properly and securely stored inside gun safes, and stolen firearms present a serious safety risk to the public.
Anyone wanting to surrender firearms to Sunshine Coast RCMP should call the non-emergency line (604-885-2266), and an officer will come to your residence to pick them up. Please do not bring firearms to the police detachment. For more information, call Sunshine Coast RCMP, or visit www.bc-gunamnesty.ca
