Grasshopper Pub reopens with new building

Pender Harbour

The Grasshopper Pub and liquor store in Madeira Park had a soft re-opening on Feb. 24, following a complete rebuild of the facility after a fire decimated the building in 2013.

Owner Bikram Brar said a grand opening is being planned that will include the reopening of the hotel that was also lost in the fire.

“We’re going to stay open – it’s just about trying to get the kinks out for the first couple weeks,” Brar said. “We’ll do a grand opening later on when we have everything running smoothly.”

A fire on Sept. 30, 2013 destroyed more than half of the building in the 12600 block of Highway 101 at Madeira Park. The fire was determined to be accidental.

At the time, Area A director Frank Mauro called the fire “a major loss,” due to the high volume of tourists and locals who frequented the Grasshopper.

Brar said everything has been rebuilt from the ground up, and they will be operating out of  “a completely new building.”

No date has been set for the grand opening.
