RainCity Housing says it’s working to have the homeless shelter in Gibsons opened for clients as of Monday evening.
Following an information meeting Jan. 22, BC Housing confirmed RainCity as the operator and finalized an agreement with Christ the King Church for the use of the basement in its building at 599 Gower Point Road.
The 15-bed shelter will operate on the cold weather shelter model, meaning it will open nights only (6 p.m. to 8 a.m.) until the end of the season on March 31.
RainCity, which also operates the Upper Deck shelter in Sechelt and has been coordinating homeless outreach services, has already created an online scheduling page for volunteers able to provide a meal for the shelter clients in Gibsons. Details are on the Sunshine Coast Homeless Outreach Facebook page.
RainCity associate director Aaron Munro said they want to thank the community for the support, and being able to get the Gibsons shelter up and running is “another example of a small community showing leadership in addressing a very real and often complicated issue.”
Anyone able to volunteer time or services at the new shelter is asked to contact RainCity’s Robert Gillard [email protected]
