The Town of Gibsons says it will scale back the level of chlorination for Zones 1 and 2 of its water system on Oct. 7, with an eye to ending it altogether on Oct. 16.
In an update posted Oct. 1, the Town said ending the chlorination will depend on “extensive water sampling” yielding clear test results.
The Town resumed chlorination of the water in Zones 1 and 2 on Sept. 21, saying it was acting on the advice of Vancouver Coastal Health’s senior drinking water officer following the replacement of two watermains in Lower Gibsons.
Gibsons also chlorinated the water in the two zones serving lower Gibsons in mid-July “as a precautionary measure” while it was working on switching Zone 3, which serves most of upper Gibsons, off of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) water supply and onto the Gibsons Aquifer.
Chlorination for Zone 3 will continue indefinitely because some SCRD water will still be needed at times of high demand and the health authority will not allow the Town to mix unchlorinated water with the chlorinated water from the SCRD.
