George economic report coming Sept. 30

GIBSONS HARBOUR

The Town of Gibsons has booked the Gibsons Legion for Tuesday, Sept. 30, to hold a special committee meeting that will feature the first in a long-awaited series of reports on the George Hotel and Residences waterfront development proposal.

The report will be an economic analysis of the project prepared by Coriolis Consulting Corp. principal and president Jay Wollenberg, a recognized land-use analyst, Gibsons chief administrative officer Mani Machado said Wednesday.

“It looks at what the economic impact of the George will be in terms of property taxes, amenities, affordable housing and servicing,” Machado said.

Asked if the report examines the economic viability of the project, Machado said: “Indirectly it does, in that it relates to the project’s ability to provide a fair amenity to the community.”

The report reflects the current project design and provides analysis that’s “been missing from the conversation,” he said. “This report, done on our behalf, uses information that is very much up to date and should be reflective of the reality.”

While the Town selected the consultant, the applicant will bear the cost of the study, Machado confirmed.

Another key report on The George, a geotechnical review of the project’s potential impact on the Gibsons aquifer, is still in the preparation stage, he said.

Unrelated to the George proposal, the committee also will receive a full report at the Sept. 30 meeting updating the status of chlorination in the municipal water system.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Gibsons Branch 109, is located at 747 Gibsons Way. The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m.
