Labour Day celebrations on the Sunshine Coast will once again be split between Sechelt and Gibsons this year.
When Unifor left the Canadian Labour Congress last January, the union and the Sunshine Coast Labour Council, which is part of the Congress, agreed to hold separate events, which has proven to be a popular formula.
The day will start in Sechelt (Monday, Sept. 2) with the Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by Unifor Local 1119. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. at Friendship Park on the Trail Bay waterfront, with the start of registration and fishing. Hot dogs will be served from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The Sunshine Coast Labour Council will host the larger Labour Day Picnic event at Dougall Park in Gibsons beginning at noon, with food, live entertainment and a keynote speech from Ray Haynes, long-time labour advocate and former secretary-treasurer of the BC federation of Labour.
Powell River - Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons is also expected to address the crowd.
The entertainment includes Matt Diamond, Jimmy Gregor and James Bowers, Grant Olsen, and Sikat-Araw Kultura Filipiniana.
There will also be children’s games and races and the highly competitive corn-shucking contest.
