The Roberts Creek Fire Department is still trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home on Grant Road Sunday evening.
Chief Patrick Higgins said the call came in just before 6 p.m. and the first crews were on the scene at 2452 Grant within 15 minutes. The building was already fully engulfed in flames and firefighters concentrated their efforts on keeping the blaze from spreading to nearby trees and parked vehicles.
Higgins said luckily there was no one in the house when the fire broke out.
At a council meeting Tuesday, Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe said the two people living in the house were both Town employees, and he’s asked senior Town staff to offer what help they can.
Water supply issues complicated the firefighting effort, and a second pump truck was called in from Gibsons under a mutual aid agreement. Highway 101 was closed to traffic for about four hours because a hose had to be run across the road to access the nearest hydrant. Vehicles were detoured down Joe Road and along Lower Road.
A total of 14 Roberts Creek firefighters and five from Gibsons were involved in extinguishing the blaze.
