Sechelt council has authorized spending to cover the cost of an emergency repair to the heating boilers in the RCMP and Justice Services building at the corner of Teredo and Shorncliffe.
In a report to the Oct. 16 council meeting, director of engineering and operations Darwyn Kutney said the boilers, which were installed in 1996 when the facility was first built, are “no longer operational.”
Kutney said the malfunctioning boilers have resulted in “multiple call-outs to contractors for repair and reset.”
“We’ve actually taken parts out of one to make the other work and it’s just barely keeping up. It was about 10 degrees in the building,” Kutney said, adding that a complete replacement is necessary because the German company that manufactured the boilers no longer makes parts for them.
He estimated the cost at between $50,000 and 60,000.
Council voted to use money from the Public Safety Reserve, which is already being drawn down for three capital projects this year: the Marine Way retaining wall, replacement of the roof at the RCMP building, and upgrading the reception area at the RCMP detachment.
The total for those projects is estimated at $368,400, leaving more than $500,000 in the reserve – more than enough to cover the new boilers, which Kutney said he hoped to have installed as quickly as possible.
