Residents of Gibsons and surrounding areas donated 4,500 items and $1,390 in cash for local food banks through a drive organized by an Elphinstone Secondary School class – more than double what they collected last year.

Students from a leadership class collected goods from neighbourhoods in Langdale, Gibsons and Roberts Creek on Dec. 8 for the Salvation Army and St. Bartholomew’s food banks in Gibsons.

Last year’s drive was considered successful in its own right, with about 2,000 food items collected.

“On behalf of the leadership class, I want to say a massive thank you to all of the generous community members who went above and beyond to donate in such quality and quantity. Your support is greatly appreciated,” said Piper Goerzen in an email to Coast Reporter.

Collections are still underway, said Goerzen, so if people wish to donate they can arrange a drop-off time by calling the school first at 604-886-22004
