A juvenile eagle caused a power outage at the Sunshine Coast Regional District's (SCRD) water treatment plant June 27.
The young eagle landed on a transformer and shorted out the line that Thursday afternoon.
"It doesn't happen very often here on the Sunshine Coast. The last one I can remember was several years ago. It was a great blue heron," said Clint Davy of the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (GWRC). "It's usually large birds with a big enough wing span that they can short out between two lines."
The young eagle was electrocuted and fell to the ground where treatment plant workers found it and called GWRC.
Davy responded and tried to capture the bird, but it hopped away and down a steep embankment.
With some help he recovered it and took it to Sechelt Animal Hospital where it was given painkillers and had some wounds stitched up.
"It had scorch marks and burns on it," Davy noted.
He took the young eagle back to GWRC to care for it, but the bird did not survive.
