Coasters wanting to rid themselves of green waste, mattresses, propane tanks, roofing and wood may want to get themselves to the Sechelt landfill and Pender Harbour Transfer Station this month. Tipping fees for materials that are diverted to Vancouver are set to rise June 1 following the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) board approval on April 26.
Fees have increased to compensate for several tender processes, which were completed for diverted materials in 2017. Costs for diverting include bin rental, processing and hauling. The last time fees were increased was in 2013. The Coast’s tipping fees are among the highest in the province.
There will be no charge for residential yard and garden waste that’s less than five tonnes and loads of five tonnes or more will cost $45 per tonne. Commercial loads will cost $86 per tonne, up from $45.
Mattresses will cost $10 rather than $8 and a surcharge of $5 will be imposed for wet ones. Disposing of five or more will increase the price per unit to $35. Asbestos and asphalt will cost $275 per tonne, dirt and rocks will cost $105 per tonne, clean wood will cost $190 per tonne, while treated or dirty wood waste and “acceptable” gypsum will cost $275 per tonne. Dead animals will cost $275 per tonne.
