Divers search Garden Bay Lake for missing man

Kayaker

An RCMP dive team searched the waters of Garden Bay Lake Tuesday after a 59-year-old Garden Bay man went missing while kayaking Sunday evening.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said the man’s family had become worried after he did not return home Sunday night and friends and family went out on the lake to search for him.

Called in shortly after midnight, RCMP and Search and Rescue continued the search. At 3 a.m., Search and Rescue located an overturned kayak on the water. It is believed to be the kayak the man had been in.

Police say no foul play is suspected.

“This is obviously a devastating time for the man’s family and friends, and we hope we can help them to get some answers about what happened,” Const. Harrison Mohr, the Sunshine Coast RCMP’s media relations officer, said Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Mohr said the RCMP dive team “did not locate the man or any further evidence; however, due to the size and depth of the lake, the search could not cover every part of the lake in its entirety. Search and Rescue volunteers may be involved in some degree of further searching of the lake in the coming days.”

The man’s name has not been released.
