Sechelt Chamber of Commerce president Kim Darwin will step away from her role with the Chamber while seeking the MLA’s seat as the Green Party candidate for the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding.

She was announced as the area’s Green candidate on Oct. 31.

She told Coast Reporter that she’ll need to step away from the Chamber in order to have enough time to devote to campaigning for the May 9, 2017 provincial election.

“I’ll be either stepping down or taking a leave of absence if we don’t have a president to step into my role,” Darwin said.

“I will probably be announcing that at the Business Excellence Awards, which will be held on Nov. 18. I’m not sure who’s going to step into the president’s role just yet, but we’ll be definitely having that conversation soon.”

She said she’s “absolutely thrilled” to be named the riding’s B.C. Green Party candidate, adding, “I want to be an active and vocal advocate in the B.C. Legislature to help build a reliable future.”

There are now two confirmed Powell River-Sunshine Coast candidates for the 2017 provincial election – Darwin and incumbent MLA Nicholas Simons of the NDP Party.

The Liberal party will hold its nomination selection meeting on Nov. 12.
