The access gates to Dakota Ridge remain shut because warmer temperatures and rain this week have delayed the opening of the recreation area.
Dakota Ridge had been anticipated to open Friday, Dec. 14, with snow accumulation reaching 30 centimetres by Dec. 11. Since then, a weather system has brought rain and increased temperatures. “There is not enough snow to open Dakota Ridge at this time,” confirmed Cecilia Garcia, communications officer at the Sunshine Coast Regional District on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Sam Adams, the parks planning coordinator at the SCRD, told Coast Reporter the recreation area typically opens the second week of December, but less snow than usual this year could cause a delay. Approximately three feet of snow are needed to open all trail systems at the ski and snowshoe destination.
