Crab harvester fined $20,000

Fisheries

A Burnaby man was fined $20,000 after pleading guilty in Sechelt provincial court on July 20 to four violations of the Fisheries Act. Danny My Ho, a commercial crab harvester, was fined for fishing for Dungeness crab in an area closed to commercial crab harvesting due to dioxin contamination.

The charges stem from Ho’s fishing activities in and around Howe Sound in August 2015 as skipper of the commercial crabbing vessel the New Star. An inspection of the vessel’s electronic monitoring data and logbook revealed that Ho was harvesting commercial crab between Aug. 15 and 26 up to one kilometre inside an area closed due to dioxin contamination near Roberts Creek and the Trail Islands.
