Council set to deal with unsightly premises

This property off Sechelt Inlet Road has been used as a dumpsite for several years. Council will likely decide this month what action to take against the off-Coast owners.

Sechelt council may take action against owners of a property that has become a dumpsite in East Porpoise Bay.

The property, owned by Rick and William Prost at 6290 Sechelt Inlet Road, has resembled a garbage dump since 2008 when complaints about the unsightliness of the property spurred bylaw enforcement from the District of Sechelt to get involved.

“Between 2008 and 2015, the owners did indicate to the District that they were making efforts on site clean-up,” said Connie Jordison, the district’s communications manager.

However, the site remains an eyesore, visible from Sechelt Inlet Road.

Early this year, the district received several new complaints about refuse on the property that includes items like mattresses, fencing, electronics, hoses, wires, plastic and household garbage.

On Feb. 12, bylaw enforcement sent notices of violation to the owners, who live off Coast.

“In the correspondence, William Prost was informed that a request for decision is being forwarded to District of Sechelt council and that council may approve to carry out the work necessary to ensure compliance. Any associated costs are to be borne by the property owner,” Jordison said.

“The district has received no responses from the owners to our 2016 correspondence.”

Staff anticipates the issue will make its way to the March 16 regular council meeting for council to decide what steps should be taken next.
