A 33-year-old motorcyclist from Coquitlam died last Thursday after flying off his motorcycle into the path of an oncoming pickup truck on Highway 101 in the south Pender Harbour area, according to Sunshine Coast RCMP.

Hugh Christopher Jones was reported by witnesses to have been excessively speeding his motorcycle before the crash, Sgt. Gerry Webb said in a news release. Just after noon on Aug. 10, Jones lost control of his 2005 Yamaha while heading northbound near Bryan Road. The bike slid on its side, throwing Jones off it before he was hit by a southbound 1997 Ford pickup truck driven by a 48-year-old Madeira Park man.

Police and Emergency Health Services attended the scene. Jones was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Hospital. The BC Coroners Service will be conducting an autopsy.

Highway traffic in the area was reduced to a single lane and closed for short periods while police investigated the scene.
