Coopers Green Hall replacement project making progress

Halfmoon Bay

The Cooper Green Hall replacement project has taken another step closer to reality with continued donations from the community and the formation of a design task force to make recommendations for the design of the replacement hall.

In June a task force made up of residents of Halfmoon Bay and the shíshálh Nation was appointed and the firm of Principle Architecture was hired by the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) to prepare a design for the new hall. Four members of the task force, of eight, are members of the Halfmoon Bay Community Association (HBCA). The task force will use community input on the hall design priorities gathered from recent open houses and surveys. In addition to the hall design, archeological and geotechnical reviews are underway.

The Halfmoon Bay Community Association is progressing on its fundraising goal of $300,000 by 2018. Contributions large and small are helping make the goal a reality. To date, over $200,000 has been raised, including several generous donations from local residents of Halfmoon Bay. Profits from AppleFest and Halfmoon Bay Fair are also destined for the hall fund. Once a design concept is completed in the spring of 2018, the community should be able to better visualize how the new hall will look along with specific features supported. Also at this time, construction costs will be better understood and continued fundraising and grant applications will be considered for the remainder of the funds.

The SCRD has also received a mix of funding from independent power project community amenity contributions in the electoral district of Halfmoon Bay and Gas Tax Funding to support the project.

All contributions are encouraged and welcome. Donations over $100 will receive a tax receipt on cheques made out to the SCRD. If you have any questions or want to make a donation, contact: Don Cunliffe, chair HBCA Fundraising Committee at [email protected] or Terry Knight, president HBCA at [email protected].
