The inaugural Deepening Community Connections environmental conference was held at Roberts Creek Hall on Feb. 27.
“This first conference was really about laying the groundwork of getting people in the same room and having them deepen their connections to each other,” Naomi Fleschhut, program manager for the Sunshine Coast Conservation Asso-ciation (SCCA), said.
The day-long event was attended by 45 participants.
Fleschhut said it was a chance for people who aren’t already involved in the sustainability movement – but who want to get more involved – to meet up with organizations in need of volunteers.
Keynote speaker Rick Kool, founder of Royal Roads University in Victoria, spoke about the re-emerging trend of earth stewardship.
There was a community round table followed by a potluck lunch and then speakers like Joanna Zilsel from the Sunshine Coast Community Solar Association introduced their projects.
The conference was put on by the SCCA, with funding from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, and support from Capilano University and the Sunshine Coast Volunteer Centre.
