Six-year completion rates for students at School District No.46 (SD46) have dropped this year, though errors have been identified in the data and results are expected to change once corrected.

Between 2013 and 2018, the overall completion rate was 86 per cent, but it fell to 83 per cent for the 2018-19 school year.

The drop for Indigenous students was more pronounced. The six-year completion rate for Indigenous students has dropped to 66 per cent after reaching an all-time high of 83 per cent last year.

Superintendent Patrick Bocking addressed the issue during the Dec. 11 school board meeting. “We’ve had a wonderful steady improvement in Indigenous six-year completion rates over the last number of years so we’re very excited about that. This year it looks like the rates seem to have declined. We are looking carefully into that.”

In an email to Coast Reporter following the meeting, Bocking said both completion rates “will quite likely change” once staff have conducted a thorough review of the data and identified and corrected all errors.

The issue is expected to be discussed at the Jan. 28 education standing committee.
