Compassionate Friends offer support

Candle Lighting Ceremony

A Candle Lighting Ceremony for parents who have survived the death of a child or children will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Hospice Building in Davis Bay.

The Compassionate Friends offer support for families who have lost a child at any age, and solace in the grief and trauma that follows. In December, instead of the regular monthly sharing meeting, a simple candle lighting ceremony is held to honour our children who have died. In this season, characterized by festivities, we create this quiet time to share our losses and our memories with others who understand. Bring a framed photo of your child/ren to be displayed with the images of the other children who will be missed more than ever during this winter holiday season. Memory cards will be available for visitors to fill out and place in a burden basket or take home.

It is difficult to welcome parents to our gatherings. Our time together is not about taking away the pain. Sometimes just knowing we are normal can be helpful and those who do come find an atmosphere of understanding and support.

For this special gathering, siblings, friends and relatives are welcome. If you can, please bring some snacks to share.

“Grief is not a disorder, a disease or sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve,” said Dr. Earl Grollman, a bereavement counsellor.

Please note that in the new year, monthly meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of every month at the Sunshine Coast Hospice Building (Kirkland Centre), 4602 Simpkins Road in Davis Bay. Call 604-740-0475.
