Community shuttle rolls out

The Gibsons and District Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Gibsons are in the driver's seat for a new community shuttle service to carry visitors and residents between the harbour area and services in the upper part of town.

The shuttle will run this Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the Gibsons Jazz Festival.

The bus will run on a half hour schedule from Gibsons marina to Park Plaza Mall and back, with service to the wharf, Sunnycrest Mall and the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

The shuttle will be back again the next weekend, in time for the Children's Festival in Dougall Park, and plans are to continue the service on weekends until Sept. 15.

Fares will be a toonie for adults or a loonie for children. The bus is fully wheelchair accessible, and large enough to accommodate a small jazz band and all their instruments.

"We are delighted to be able to support this project, which citizens have been requesting for years," said Gibsons Mayor Wayne Rowe. "We hope to run this as a test project throughout the summer to establish the feasibility of a longer term solution."

A community shuttle service has long been identified as a priority by community organizations and Town planners. The topography that creates the town's beautiful views also means a steep climb - a particular challenge for seniors and others without a vehicle.

Further details of the community shuttle service will be announced in the next two weeks.
