The District of Sechelt has scheduled World Cafés on July 9 and 10 as part of the recently announced consultation on the future of the Sunshine Coast Community Forest.
Sechelt communications manager Julie Rogers said the format will include a brief presentation on the Community Forest, then people will break off into small groups to discuss some key questions with a note taker at each table. The note taker will then share their table’s input with the larger group.
The district announced the consultations last month, as a way to “check in with the community to ensure future operations meet the community’s values.”
The consultations follow a year in which the Community Forest faced a court challenge over its operations and come on the heels of the resignation of the president, vice-president and one board member.
Sechelt council was expected to endorse the latest round of Sunshine Coast Community Forest Legacy Fund grants at its July 4 meeting, ahead of the July 23 Community Forest AGM.
The Gibsons Landing Heritage Society was to be awarded $21,292 for a lighting upgrade; the Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue Society was in line for $50,000 for the expansion of its Field Road hall; the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden was to get a grant of $22,400 to create a mountainside Habitat Garden; and Serendipity Daycare was to be awarded $7,000 for playground equipment and the purchase of a commercial fridge.
The World Cafés will be held at the Seaside Centre July 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and July 10 from noon to 2:30 p.m. The district is asking people interested in participating to register at [email protected]
The Community Forest consultation will wrap up in September with a report to council.
