Committee OKs variance to allow new Rexall sign

District of Sechelt

Sechelt council’s planning and development committee has recommended approval of a variance permit to allow a larger sign for the new Rexall drugstore in Trail Bay Mall.

At its Jan. 28 meeting, the committee agreed to the sign variance permit allowing for 1.8 m lettering instead of the proposed 2.13 m. The tops of the letters in Rexall are also allowed to exceed the top of the roof under the variance permit.

The sign, which replaced the Shoppers Drugmart sign, is bigger than what is legally conforming under sign bylaw No. 456. Established in 2006, the sign bylaw permits a maximum area of three square metres and a character height of 0.6 metres.

Additionally, lettering cannot exceed the roof line of the building it is on.

Although the previous Shoppers sign exceeded this, it was built before the 2006 bylaw was put in place.

Sewer service

Onni developers have petitioned the District of Sechelt to extend the sewer services area to include their new East Porpoise Bay development property.

In 2000, Onni proposed to service their townhouse development with a private, on-site sewage treatment plant.

In 2013 it was determined that Onni could instead tie into an existing force main line connected to the District of Sechelt sewer system.

In exchange for tapping into Sechelt’s sewers, Onni will have to undertake waterfront improvements, oversize the lift station to accommodate sewer flows from the East Porpoise Bay neighbourhood, pay a contribution of $2,658 per unit (instead of sewer treatment development cost charges), and pay $2,200 per unit for sewage collection after phase one of the development has been completed.

Onni is building 116 residential townhouses in Porpoise Bay. Phase one (the first 27 townhouses) is nearing completion.
