Coastal route proposal in early stages

Biking

Tentative plans for a bike route that connects Langdale to Earls Cove are in the early stages, but could prove to be financially lucrative.

Tim Howard, director of Transportation Choices - Sunshine Coast, and Donna McMahon, executive director of Chamber of Commerce, presented their plans for a Coastal bike route to Gibsons committee of the whole on Feb. 3.

“What we wish to achieve is a designated, mapped bike touring route for the Lower Sunshine Coast that will serve as an attractant to bike tourists from the Lower Mainland, B.C., and parts farther abroad,” Howard said.

Howard and McMahon sought approval to send a staff member to represent Gibsons on a community-related working group and to begin drafting a route design.

The project aims to create a bike path connecting Sunshine Coast communities between Langdale and Earls Cove so cyclists can tour the Coast without having to ride on the highway.

It’s a joint project between Transportation Choices - Sunshine Coast and the Gibsons and District Chamber of Commerce, partnered with many cycling organizations around the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast.

Mayor Wayne Rowe requested that a council representative check in with Howard and McMahon to get a realistic idea of the time implications for this project before it is brought back to council for further discussion and a decision.
