The Coast Guard says it’s not certain if the owner of a 15-metre yacht that ran aground near Egmont last month is planning to salvage the boat, and in the meantime the wreck is being monitored to see if it’s causing any pollution.
The Spera struck a rock in Secret Bay around 8 p.m. Jan. 27 while headed south up Sechelt Inlet to Porpoise Bay with two people on board. The boat began to list and was taking on water through its portholes.
Another boat nearby, the Devil Fish, as well as the Coast Guard vessel Cape Kuper out of Powell River, assisted.
Coast Guard spokesman Dan Bate told Coast Reporter they brought in a salvage company to prevent a spill from the diesel fuel on board, and there have also been two overflights by aircraft from the Transport Canada National Aerial Surveillance Program to check for signs of pollution.
