Celebrity chef Alex Chen is coming to Gibsons Public Market on Aug. 11 to host a one-night-only dinner showcasing the best of B.C.’s sustainable seafood industry.

The event is a special fundraiser in support of the Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre.

“We’re pretty pumped about this because Alex is a bit of a rock star on the local food scene – he’s an Iron Chef Canada winner, he won the Gold Medal Plates competition, and his restaurant (Boulevard) has a laundry list of awards to be proud of,” public market executive director Colin Stansfield said.

“He’s agreed to come to Gibsons because he noticed the work we’re doing at the Marine Education Centre.”

Working alongside award-winning chef Mary Lee Newnham of Emelle’s Market Bistro, Chen will present an eight-course tasting menu. All money raised through ticket sales and donations will support the Sonntag Centre.

The centre was created to inspire Coast residents and visitors to learn about the undersea world of Howe Sound and Sechelt Inlet.

“That same spirit of discovery, localism and marine stewardship will carry through to the plate as Alex introduces guests to innovative new products and delivers a master class on culinary technique,” the public market said in a release. “With support from suppliers like Northern Divine, Fisherman’s Market, Fanny Bay Oysters, Tinhorn Creek Winery, and Paradise Valley Produce, this is sure to be a memorable evening.”
