Come celebrate the ocean’s bounty at the inaugural Sechelt Salmon Festival.

Join the Sechelt First Nation (shíshálh) to celebrate this year’s generous return of the sockeye salmon on Saturday, Oct. 25, with a complimentary grilled salmon feast at the House of héwhíwus (House of Chiefs) complex, 5555 Sunshine Coast Highway, Sechelt.

They’ll be serving grilled salmon with side dishes and refreshments from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and they welcome everyone to enjoy it. Come early, at 4 p.m., to see a demonstration of their community’s ancient salmon cooking technique by Sechelt Elder James Dixon (mus-swiya) and hear some fun stories about the wild salmon. At 5:30 there will be traditional singing, dancing and drumming with xwamstut (which translates as ambassadors), and barbecue cookbook author Rockin’ Ronnie Shewchuk will start serving up a festive salmon supper.

The shíshálh people value the importance of wild salmon to their health, wealth and culture. The Nation has been working for over 20 years with the Sunshine Coast Regional District and Regional Power to increase salmon runs.
