Businesses warned of scam artist

A person who says they are a member of the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary and working on behalf of the Sechelt Fire Department, is targeting Sechelt downtown businesses seeking a donation.

According to Sechelt fire Chief Bill Higgs and the Sechelt Downtown Business Association (SDBA), some businesses have been approached by a woman in her mid-40s who says she is selling advertising for a fire safety booklet.

"Although the department does produce a fire safety booklet, we are not currently working on that and advertising is not being sold," said Higgs. "We do have a person who does help us sell advertising when we produce the booklet, but he has a signed letter from myself. We think this is a total scam."Higgs was first alerted to the possible scam by the president of the Auxiliary. Higgs then in turn contacted the SDBA so they could notify its members and a file has also been generated by the Sunshine Coast RCMP who have started an investigation.

"Hopefully through all these channels we can get the message out and this person can be caught," added Higgs.
