A bus driver is being credited with finding a senior who went missing on Dec. 17.

Sunshine Coast RCMP say they were notified around 3:30 p.m. that a 74-year-old man with dementia had been missing from a residence in Gibsons for several hours.

Family members and police searched the area and reviewed surveillance video from a local business in an attempt to track his movements.

Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue was notified and photos of the man were sent out to BC Transit so that bus drivers along the Coast could watch out for him.

“Within 15 minutes of receiving the photo and description of the man, sharp-eyed local bus driver Matthew Evans saw the man walking several kilometres from where he had gone missing,” RCMP said in a release.

“Mr. Evans was able to provide information which helped officers to locate the man who thankfully was uninjured.”

The man was returned to his family.

Const. Karen Whitby said with colder temperatures and darker evenings, the outcome could have been much more serious if the missing senior had not been found when he was.
