Two of the best midget teams in the province, Whistler and the Sunshine Coast, faced off for gold on Thursday morning, March 17, for the final game of the 2016 Midget Tier 3 Championship.

The body checks were hard hitting, the goal tending was outstanding and the community support was heartfelt.

In the dying seconds of the third period with the game tied 2-2, Whistler got a lucky bounce and it found its way to the back of the Blues’ net.

The biggest hearts and a valiant effort by our local boys make anyone who was part of this journey or was lucky enough to witness it beam with pride.

“The whole experience for the boys has been phenomenal,” Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association (SCMHA) chair Brenda Rowe said. “The amount of fans that came out to their games was unprecedented for that building. I’m guessing there was between 700 and 800 people for the last game.”

Rowe said that every Blues game during the championship filled the Gibsons and Area Community Centre to standing room only.

“This has been an amazing ride for them – most of these kids have played together since they were five,” Rowe said.

“This was the season we all knew they were capable of.”
